Why Asherah?

The Asherah Institute is named after an ancient goddess of fertility, motherhood, and the tree of life — theorized to be the partner or consort to God.

Despite Asherah's presence in early religious texts, her significance was marginalized and her worship suppressed by later biblical editors who favored a monotheistic, single male deity.

Asherah is symbolic of the narrative surrounding women's hormonal mental health, which likewise has been historically and systemically marginalized and pathologized from our medical establishments and our cultural conversations.

With Asherah's name, we seek to reclaim the power underlying each individual hormonal journey, reinforce the truth that these transitions are sacred, strong, and powerful, and restore our collective strength by hearing, understanding, uplifting and healing ourselves and each other.
